Bluff City Baby: Local program promotes early literacy for newborns

Read901 has launched a program to encourage early literacy for Memphis-area newborns. The Bluff City Baby program encourages new parents to make reading a part of family life. The organization is a citywide literacy initiative powered by Literacy Mid-South. Bluff City Baby partners with area hospitals to give parents of newborns backpacks filled with items for nurturing, talking, reading and playing. Each backpack includes a literacy magnet and guide, a board alphabet book, a crinkle sensory book, diapers, a bib, a onesie and a congratulatory letter.

Regional One is the latest hospital to partner in the program. Bluff City Baby began as a pilot program at Methodist South Hospital last January. The program also has plans for expansion with hospitals across Shelby County. Read the full article here!
